What Not To Give This Christmas

Justin HardingSaving Tips

Don’t waste your hard-earned money on a bad gift this Christmas! Before you head to the shops or wrap up something you’ve had stashed under your bed for months, make sure your gift ideas don’t land under one of the following categories.

1. Gifts that could send the wrong message.

Even if your mother’s bathroom scale is broken, it might not be the best idea to give her one for Christmas. Be wary of any present that could seem like a critique of the recipient’s physical appearance unless they’ve specifically mentioned they wanted something that could fall into this category. If you’re not sure, simply steer clear of gym memberships, shape wear, waxing certificates and the like.

Overly practical gifts

Unless your best friend is truly lusting over a new vacuum cleaner, the holidays are not the time to gift cleaning supplies and household necessities. Fun kitchen gadgets can make awesome gifts if the recipient enjoys cooking, but anything mundane should be avoided. Seriously – mops do not sing of the Christmas spirit.

3. Gifts that are actually for you

It’s easy to fall into this trap when buying gifts for someone you live with. Let’s face it; giving your partner a new television that you’re going to use more often is actually a gift for you. Brainstorm presents you can’t share or shared items that they’ll definitely be more excited about.

4. An obviously regifted gift

No one in your circle wants those salt and pepper shakers Aunt Mildred gave you for Secret Santa last year. Only regift an item if there’s no way the recipient could discover the true origin of the gift, and if the item is something you’d pick up for them anyways. Obviously regifted gifts can sting more than no gift at all, so proceed with caution.

5. Gifts that drive you into debt

As much as you’d like to surprise your sister with a luxury handbag, it’s not worth straining yourself financially to make it happen. If you do have a few extra grand kicking around in your account from a Christmas bonus, make an executive decision, but otherwise it’s best to find a less expensive way to express your love. They’ll understand!
