Want to work towards your money saving goals and help the environment at the same time?

All it takes is being mindful of how much water you use on a daily basis to save money. If you’re looking for easy ways to save both water and extra cash at home, read on for our top water saving tips. It’s a win-win situation!

1. Turn off the water while brushing teeth or shaving.

Whether you’re using the sink to brush your teeth or shaving your legs in the shower, make sure to turn off the water once you’re prepped to save money Need to shave your face? You can fill the sink partway with water and turn off the tap while you go about your routine.

2. Plant vegetation that requires little watering.

You use up more water than you’d imagine keeping up a large lawn, so if you can’t downsize the amount of greenery on your property, it’s best to choose grasses, shrubs and native plants that require less watering.

3. Cut down on shower time.

It may be fun to blast music and daydream for thirty minutes in the shower each morning, but it’s a huge waste of water. Cut down your showers to five minutes or less a few times a week to greatly decrease your water usage.

4. Make the most of mulch.

A layer of mulch will help your soil retain water, allowing the moisture to be distributed over time. Plus, you’ll notice fewer weeds in your garden!

5. Only run your dishwasher or washing machine when full.

There’s no reason to run these appliances for a couple of dirty items. Instead, wait until you have enough clothing or dishes for a full load (or simply wash your favourite mug by hand).

6. Repair leaks ASAP.

Regularly check your property for leaks and tend to them right away. A leaky sink or hose might not seem like a huge deal at first, but letting it slide can waste a lot of water over time. Plus, water damage caused by any leaks could end up costing you big bucks to repair.

7. Water early in the day.

If you wait the afternoon to water your lawn, you risk evaporation, and if you water at night, you risk the chance of mould. Early morning watering is your best bet!

8. Re-use pasta water.

Drain your pasta water back into the pot and use it later to water houseplants.

9. Turn off the hose while washing your car.

Make sure your hose isn’t running while you scrub your car. Fill up a small bucket to help you create suds, and keep the hose off until it’s time to rinse.

10. Wash your hair less often.

From time to time, skip washing your hair (or a shower altogether). You’ll not only save water, you’ll also get out the door earlier!
